The University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 1880, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and education, and has become one of the most respected orchestras in the United States. The UMSO was founded by a group of students at the University of Michigan who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create an ensemble that would allow them to perform together. The orchestra began as a small group of musicians, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Over the years, the UMSO has been led by many distinguished conductors, including Gustav Meier, Kenneth Kiesler, and Arie Lipsky. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the Kennedy Center's "Michigan Week" celebration, and received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Copland. The UMSO has also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, and the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. In addition to its performances, the UMSO is also committed to education and outreach. The orchestra regularly collaborates with local schools and community organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities for young people.
