Birth:March 21, 1945 in Coronado, CAEd Soph is a renowned jazz drummer and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born on September 22, 1945, in Houston, Texas, Soph grew up in a musical family. His father was a professional saxophonist, and his mother was a pianist. Soph started playing drums at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for jazz music. Soph attended the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas, where he studied percussion and jazz. He graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Music degree and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1972. During his time at UNT, Soph had the opportunity to study with some of the most prominent jazz musicians of the time, including Louie Bellson, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones. After completing his studies, Soph began his professional career as a drummer, performing with various jazz ensembles and artists. He played with the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and the Bill Evans Trio, among others. Soph's drumming style was characterized by his technical proficiency, creativity, and versatility. He was equally comfortable playing swing, bebop, and fusion styles of jazz. In addition to his work as a performer, Soph was also a highly respected educator. He joined the faculty of UNT in 1972 and taught percussion and jazz studies for over 30 years. During his tenure, he mentored countless students who went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Soph was known for his innovative teaching methods, which emphasized the importance of developing a strong foundation in rhythm and technique. Soph's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was named the Outstanding Jazz Educator by the International Association of Jazz Educators. He was also inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2008. In addition, Soph was a prolific author and composer, having written several instructional books and recorded numerous albums as a bandleader. One of Soph's most memorable performances was his appearance at the 1987 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He performed with the Bill Evans Trio, which also included bassist Marc Johnson and pianist Bill Evans. The trio's performance was widely acclaimed, and Soph's drumming was particularly praised for its sensitivity and musicality. Soph continued to perform and teach until his retirement in 2006. He currently resides in Denton, Texas, where he remains active in the local music scene.
