Born on March 14, 1964, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dzubay grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, so music was always a part of his life. Dzubay began his musical education at an early age, studying piano and trumpet. He later attended Indiana University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. While at Indiana University, Dzubay discovered his passion for composition and began studying with renowned composer Donald Erb. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dzubay went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the Eastman School of Music. He then continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition. Throughout his career, Dzubay has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a composer. In 1999, he was awarded the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has also received commissions from a variety of organizations, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
