Pauls Putnins is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of choral music. He was born on 22nd September 1975 in Riga, Latvia, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music from a young age. Putnins began his musical journey by learning the piano at the age of six. However, he soon discovered his passion for singing and joined the Riga Cathedral Boys' Choir. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the choir's lead soloist. His talent was evident, and he was soon selected to represent Latvia in various international competitions. In 1993, Putnins enrolled at the Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied choral conducting under the tutelage of Imants Kokars. He graduated with honors in 1998 and went on to pursue a master's degree in choral conducting at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. After completing his studies, Putnins returned to Latvia and became the conductor of the Riga Cathedral Boys' Choir. He also founded the Latvian Radio Choir, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative and experimental approach to choral music. Putnins' talent as a conductor was soon recognized on the international stage. In 2002, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, a position he held until 2013. During his tenure, he led the choir to numerous awards and accolades, including the Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 2007. In addition to his work with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Putnins has conducted many other renowned choirs, including the BBC Singers, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, and the Swedish Radio Choir. He has also collaborated with many leading composers, including Arvo Part, Pēteris Vasks, and Eriks Esenvalds. Putnins' innovative approach to choral music has earned him widespread acclaim. He is known for his ability to blend traditional choral music with contemporary styles, creating a unique and captivating sound. In 2014, he was awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award, the highest honor in Latvian music. He has also received the Order of the Three Stars, the highest civilian honor in Latvia.
