The Birth of the Vienna Piano Trio The Vienna Piano Trio was formed in Vienna, Austria in 1988. The founding members of the trio were violinist Wolfgang Redik, cellist Marcus Trefny, and pianist Stefan Mendl. The trio was initially formed as a chamber music group to perform the works of classical composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. The trio quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring new life to classical works. In 1991, the trio won the prestigious International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne, Australia, which helped to launch their international career. Growth of the Vienna Piano Trio Over the years, the Vienna Piano Trio has undergone some changes in its membership. In 1998, violinist David McCarroll joined the group, replacing Wolfgang Redik. McCarroll had previously been a member of the Arditti Quartet and had performed with many of the world's leading orchestras. In 2001, cellist Clemens Hagen joined the trio, replacing Marcus Trefny. Hagen had previously been a member of the Hagen Quartet, which was founded by his three brothers. With the addition of Hagen, the Vienna Piano Trio became a truly international ensemble, with members from Austria, the United States, and Australia. The Vienna Piano Trio has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. They have also performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Highlights of Major Performances The Vienna Piano Trio has had many highlights throughout their career. In 1993, they made their debut at the Wigmore Hall in London, which was a major milestone for the group. They have since returned to the Wigmore Hall many times and have become one of the hall's most popular ensembles. In 1995, the Vienna Piano Trio performed at the Salzburg Festival, one of the world's most prestigious classical music festivals. They performed works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms to critical acclaim. In 2003, the trio performed at the BBC Proms in London, which is one of the world's largest classical music festivals. They performed works by Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert to a packed audience at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2011, the Vienna Piano Trio performed at the Musikverein in Vienna, one of the world's most famous concert halls. They performed works by Schubert, Brahms, and Dvorak to a sold-out audience. Awards and Accolades The Vienna Piano Trio has won many awards and accolades throughout their career. In addition to winning the International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne in 1991, they have also won the Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria, and the Premio Trio di Trieste in Italy.
