He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents recognized his musical talent at an early age. Lantz began playing the violin when he was just four years old, and he quickly became a prodigy. Lantz's parents were both members of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and they encouraged their son to pursue a career in music. Lantz attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied under the renowned violinist Joseph Silverstein. He also studied with Ivan Galamian at the Meadowmount School of Music in New York. After completing his studies, Lantz began his professional career as a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He quickly established himself as one of the most talented violinists in the orchestra, and he was soon offered a position with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lantz played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for several years before joining the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1964. Lantz's time with the Philadelphia Orchestra was a highlight of his career. He played under the direction of Eugene Ormandy, one of the most respected conductors of the 20th century. Lantz was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring emotion to his performances. He was a favorite of Ormandy, who often featured him as a soloist. Lantz's performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra were widely acclaimed. He played in many of the orchestra's most famous recordings, including the soundtrack for the movie "Amadeus." Lantz also performed with other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a performer, Lantz was also a respected teacher. He passed away on December 28, 2017, at the age of 86. His legacy lives on through his recordings, his students, and the many musicians he inspired throughout his career.
