Born on October 1, 1952, in Arlington, Texas, Seelig grew up in a musical family and began singing in church choirs at a young age. He attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1974 and a Master of Music degree in 1976. Seelig's career in music began as a high school choir director in Texas, where he quickly gained a reputation for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to inspire his students. In 1981, he was appointed the director of choral activities at the University of Tennessee, where he led the university's choral program to national prominence. During his tenure at the University of Tennessee, Seelig also served as the artistic director of the Knoxville Choral Society and the Knoxville Opera Company. In 1996, Seelig was appointed the artistic director of the Turtle Creek Chorale, a men's chorus based in Dallas, Texas. Under his leadership, the Turtle Creek Chorale became one of the most respected and acclaimed men's choruses in the world, known for its innovative programming and powerful performances. Seelig also founded the Women's Chorus of Dallas in 1989, which he directed until 1994. Seelig's work with the Turtle Creek Chorale and the Women's Chorus of Dallas earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art by Chorus America, the national service organization for choral music in the United States. In 2005, he was named one of the "Top 25 Dynamic and Inspiring Conductors" by Classical Singer magazine. Seelig's career as a conductor and educator has taken him around the world, where he has conducted and taught in some of the most prestigious venues and institutions in the world. He has conducted the San Francisco Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. He has also served as a guest conductor and clinician for numerous choral festivals and workshops throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to his work as a conductor and educator, Seelig is also an accomplished singer. He has performed as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. He has also recorded several albums as a solo artist, including "The Timothy Seelig Collection" and "The Timothy Seelig Christmas Album." Seelig's contributions to the world of music have been recognized by numerous organizations and institutions. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of North Texas, his alma mater. In 2013, he was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, and in 2014, he was inducted into the North Texas Choral Directors Association Hall of Fame. Today, Seelig continues to inspire and educate musicians around the world through his work as a conductor, singer, and educator. He is currently the artistic director of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, where he has led the chorus to new heights of artistic excellence and social activism.
