He was the youngest of 12 children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a minister and his mother was a gospel singer, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Anderson began singing in church at a young age and later joined a local R&B group called The Centurys. He moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1960s and became a member of The Second Coming, a group that performed at the famous Apollo Theater in New York City. In the early 1970s, Anderson moved to Los Angeles and began working as a session singer. He sang backup vocals for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Lou Rawls, and The Supremes. He also appeared in the film version of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1973, playing the role of Judas Iscariot. Anderson's breakthrough came in 1985 when he was cast as Judas in the Broadway revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar." His performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He also appeared in the 1988 film version of the musical, reprising his role as Judas. In addition to his work in "Jesus Christ Superstar," Anderson appeared in several other Broadway productions, including "The Wiz," "My One and Only," and "Play On!" He also released several albums as a solo artist, including "Absence Without Love" and "Fantasy Hotel." Anderson's talent as a singer and actor earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In addition to his Tony Award nomination, he received a Drama Desk Award for his performance in "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a NAACP Image Award for his role in "The Wiz." Anderson continued to perform and record music until his death on February 23, 2004, at the age of 58. He was survived by his wife, Veronica, and their two children.
