Role:EnsembleMelbourne Chorale is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 70 years. The choir was founded in 1944 by conductor and composer George Logie-Smith, who aimed to create a choir that would perform the great choral works of the past and present. The choir started with just 30 members, but quickly grew in size and reputation. In the early years, the choir performed in various venues around Melbourne, including the Melbourne Town Hall and St Paul's Cathedral. They also collaborated with other musical groups, such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Ballet. One of the highlights of Melbourne Chorale's early years was their performance of Handel's Messiah in 1956, which was broadcast on national radio. This performance helped to establish the choir as one of the leading choral groups in Australia. Over the years, Melbourne Chorale has performed a wide range of choral works, from the Renaissance to contemporary music. They have also commissioned new works from Australian composers, including Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards. One of the most significant moments in Melbourne Chorale's history was their performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1975. This performance was conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario and featured soloists such as Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti. The concert was a huge success and cemented Melbourne Chorale's reputation as a world-class choir. In 1984, Melbourne Chorale appointed their current conductor, Jonathan Grieves-Smith. Under his leadership, the choir has continued to grow and thrive. They have performed in many prestigious venues, including the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall in London. One of the highlights of Melbourne Chorale's recent years was their performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 2010. This performance was conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and featured over 500 performers, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian National Academy of Music. Melbourne Chorale has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1994, they were awarded the Order of Australia for their services to music. They have also won numerous awards at choral competitions, both in Australia and internationally. Despite their many achievements, Melbourne Chorale remains committed to their original mission of performing great choral works. They continue to inspire audiences with their exceptional performances and dedication to the art of choral music.More....
