Perspectives Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1993 by Sato Mougalian, a flutist and music educator. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and collaborations with other artists. The founding of Perspectives Ensemble was inspired by Mougalian's desire to create a chamber music group that would explore the connections between different musical traditions and cultures. She wanted to bring together musicians from diverse backgrounds and create a space where they could collaborate and experiment with new ideas. The ensemble's main members include Sato Mougalian on flute, Karen Bogardus on violin, Wendy Sutter on cello, and Margaret Kampmeier on piano. Over the years, the ensemble has also worked with a number of guest artists, including percussionist Glen Velez, clarinetist David Krakauer, and vocalist Meredith Monk. One of the highlights of Perspectives Ensemble's career was their collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in 1995. The two groups performed together at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the concert was hailed as a groundbreaking event in the world of contemporary classical music. The collaboration was also documented in a film called "In Rehearsal with the Kronos Quartet," which was released in 1996. Another notable performance by Perspectives Ensemble was their 2001 concert at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The concert featured works by composers from around the world, including Japan, Armenia, and the United States. The ensemble also premiered a new work by composer Tania León, which was commissioned specifically for the concert. In addition to their performances, Perspectives Ensemble has also received a number of awards and honors over the years. In 1998, they were awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support their work in promoting cultural diversity in classical music. They have also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and WNYC's "New Sounds."
