Bobo started playing the piano at a young age, but he soon discovered his love for the tuba. Bobo's musical journey began when he joined the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra as a tuba player. He later went on to study at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1960. During his time at USC, Bobo studied under the tutelage of the legendary tuba player, Tommy Johnson. After completing his studies, Bobo joined the United States Army Band in Washington D.C. He served as the principal tuba player for the band from 1960 to 1963. During his time in the army, Bobo had the opportunity to perform for President John F. Kennedy and other high-ranking officials. Bobo's performances were characterized by his ability to produce a rich, warm tone on the tuba, which was often compared to the sound of a cello. One of the highlights of Bobo's career was his performance of the Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams. He also recorded the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was released on the RCA label.
