Tom Scott is a renowned American saxophonist, composer, and arranger who has made significant contributions to the world of jazz and popular music. Born on May 19, 1948, in Los Angeles, California, Scott grew up in a musical family and began playing the clarinet at the age of eight. He later switched to the saxophone and quickly developed a passion for jazz music. Scott's early musical influences included jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. He also drew inspiration from the music of rock and roll pioneers like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. As a teenager, Scott began playing in local jazz clubs and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician. In 1967, Scott joined the jazz-rock band The Blues Project, which was known for its fusion of blues, rock, and jazz music. He played saxophone and flute on the band's album "Reunion in Central Park" and toured with them for several years. During this time, Scott also worked as a session musician, playing on recordings by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Steely Dan. In 1971, Scott formed his own jazz fusion group, The L.A. Express, which included musicians such as drummer Harvey Mason and guitarist Larry Carlton. The group released several albums and became known for their energetic and innovative performances. In 1974, Scott won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance for his album "Tom Cat," which featured The L.A. Express. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Scott continued to work as a session musician and collaborated with a wide range of artists, including George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Whitney Houston. He also composed music for films and television shows, including the theme song for the hit TV series "Starsky and Hutch." In 1982, Scott released his album "Desire," which featured the hit single "Sneakin' in the Back." The song became a crossover hit, reaching the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning Scott a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. In the 1990s, Scott continued to explore new musical styles and collaborated with artists such as Michael McDonald and Bonnie Raitt. He also released several solo albums, including "Born Again" and "Blow It Out," which featured a mix of jazz, funk, and rock music. In 2000, Scott was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the world of music. He has also received numerous other awards and honors throughout his career, including several Grammy nominations and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation of America. Today, Scott continues to perform and record music, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless jazz and popular musicians. He remains a beloved figure in the world of music, known for his virtuosic saxophone playing, innovative compositions, and boundless creativity.
