Peter Herresthal is a Norwegian violinist who has established himself as one of the most prominent classical music artists of his generation. Born on August 16, 1961, in Oslo, Norway, Herresthal showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. He received his first lessons from his mother, who was a pianist, and later studied with renowned violinists such as Arve Tellefsen and Camilla Wicks. Herresthal's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. At the age of 12, he made his debut as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3. This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. Throughout his career, Herresthal has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Sir Andrew Davis. One of the highlights of Herresthal's career was his performance of György Ligeti's Violin Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003. This performance was widely acclaimed by critics and established Herresthal as one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary music. He has since become known for his innovative and adventurous programming, often including works by contemporary composers in his performances. In addition to his work as a soloist, Herresthal is also an active chamber musician. He has performed with many distinguished musicians, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, cellist Truls Mørk, and violist Lars Anders Tomter. Together with Andsnes and Mørk, he formed the Trio Mediæval, which has gained international recognition for its innovative and eclectic repertoire. Herresthal's recordings have received widespread critical acclaim and have won numerous awards. His recording of the complete works for violin and orchestra by Carl Nielsen, with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton, won the Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) for Best Classical Album in 2006. His recording of the violin concertos by Arne Nordheim, with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds, won the same award in 2010. In addition to his performing career, Herresthal is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo since 1991 and has also given masterclasses at many prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. His students have gone on to win many prizes and awards, and several have established successful careers as soloists and chamber musicians. Herresthal's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with many awards and honors. In 2007, he was awarded the Sibelius Prize by the Norwegian Sibelius Society for his outstanding interpretations of the music of Jean Sibelius.
