Walter Hilgers is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a conductor, composer, and arranger. Born on August 22, 1959, in Germany, Hilgers showed an early interest in music and began playing the trumpet at the age of six. He went on to study music at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, where he received his diploma in conducting and trumpet performance. Hilgers began his career as a trumpet player, performing with various orchestras and ensembles in Germany and other parts of Europe. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in conducting, and he began to focus on developing his skills in this area. He studied with some of the most renowned conductors of the time, including Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. In 1987, Hilgers was appointed as the principal conductor of the German Brass Ensemble, a position he held for over a decade. During this time, he also served as the principal conductor of the WDR Big Band in Cologne and the German Army Band in Siegburg. He also conducted numerous other orchestras and ensembles, both in Germany and abroad. Hilgers is also a prolific composer and arranger, with over 500 works to his name. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also written music for film and television, including the score for the German film "Der Schuh des Manitu." One of the highlights of Hilgers' career was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan in 2005. During his tenure with the orchestra, he led them on numerous tours and conducted a wide range of repertoire, from classical works to contemporary pieces. He also worked to promote classical music in Taiwan, organizing educational programs and outreach initiatives to introduce young people to the joys of classical music. Hilgers has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the German Music Prize and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He has also been recognized for his contributions to music education, receiving the German Music Education Prize in 2010.
