He was born on 12th June 1945 in Vienna, Austria. His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Herbert showed a keen interest in music and started playing the piano when he was just five years old. He was a prodigious talent, and his parents recognized his potential early on. Herbert's parents enrolled him in the Vienna Conservatory when he was just eight years old. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Austria, including Franz Schmidt and Alfred Uhl. Herbert's talent was evident from the start, and he quickly became one of the most promising students at the conservatory. He excelled in his studies and was soon performing in public concerts. Herbert's first major performance was at the age of 12 when he played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Herbert received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of Herbert's career as a concert pianist. Herbert continued to study at the Vienna Conservatory and graduated with honors when he was 18 years old. He then went on to study at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where he studied under the renowned pianist and conductor, Karl Richter. Herbert's time at the Mozarteum was a turning point in his career. He learned a great deal from Richter and was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and traditions. After completing his studies at the Mozarteum, Herbert embarked on a career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. Herbert's performances were always highly anticipated, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. One of Herbert's most memorable performances was at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1972. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Herbert received a standing ovation from the audience. The concert was broadcast on television and was watched by millions of people around the world. Herbert's career continued to flourish throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He played with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also recorded extensively, releasing numerous albums of solo piano music and concertos. In recognition of his contributions to the world of music, Herbert received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1978, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1985 he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. He was also made an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990. Despite his success, Herbert remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve his technique and musicality. He was a beloved figure in the world of classical music, and his performances inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world.
