Born on May 12, 1985, in Zurich, Switzerland, Pfister showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. His parents, both professional musicians, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Pfister's early musical education was under the tutelage of his father, who was a cellist in the Zurich Opera House. He later studied at the Zurich University of the Arts, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Performance. He then went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Master's degree in Music Performance. Pfister's talent and dedication to his craft were evident from an early age. He won his first competition at the age of nine and went on to win numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2003, he won the Swiss Youth Music Competition, and in 2005, he won the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria. Pfister's career took off after he won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2007. This competition is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world and has launched the careers of many famous musicians. Pfister's performance of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations was praised by the judges and the audience alike, and he was awarded first prize. After his win at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Pfister's career skyrocketed. He was invited to perform with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. Pfister's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Tchaikovsky and Dvořák, and his performances of their cello concertos are considered some of the best in the world. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Pfister is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's most renowned chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He is also a member of the Pfister Trio, which he formed with his brother, pianist David Pfister, and violinist Sarah Chang. Pfister's talent and dedication to his craft have earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In addition to his win at the Tchaikovsky Competition, he has also won the Geneva International Music Competition, the ARD International Music Competition, and the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition.
