Bernarda Bobro was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 10, 1946, in Zagreb, Croatia. She was the daughter of a famous Croatian composer, Stjepan Sulek, who was also a professor of composition at the Zagreb Academy of Music. Bernarda grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. Her father was her first music teacher, and he taught her how to play the piano and the violin. Bernarda's talent for music was evident from a young age, and she began performing in public when she was just six years old. She made her debut as a soloist with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra when she was only 12 years old, playing the violin concerto by Felix Mendelssohn. Her performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of her career as a classical music artist. Bernarda continued her musical education at the Zagreb Academy of Music, where she studied violin with Josip Klima and chamber music with the renowned Croatian pianist, Bruno Bjelinski. She graduated with honors in 1968 and went on to pursue further studies in Vienna, Austria, with the famous violinist, Nathan Milstein. In 1970, Bernarda won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, which was a major turning point in her career. The competition was highly competitive, and Bernarda's performance was praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Her victory brought her international recognition, and she began to receive invitations to perform in major concert halls around the world. Over the course of her career, Bernarda performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of Bernarda's career was her performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan in 1978. The performance was recorded live and released on CD, and it is still considered one of the greatest recordings of the Brahms Violin Concerto ever made. Bernarda was also a passionate chamber musician, and she performed regularly with her husband, the pianist Bruno Canino. Together, they recorded many albums of chamber music, including works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. In addition to her performing career, Bernarda was also a respected music educator. She taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music for many years and was a visiting professor at many other music schools around the world. She was known for her dedication to her students and her ability to inspire them to achieve their full potential. Throughout her career, Bernarda received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1991, she was awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska, the highest civilian honor in Croatia, for her outstanding achievements in the field of music. She was also awarded the Medal of the City of Zagreb in 2006 for her contributions to the cultural life of the city. Sadly, Bernarda passed away on December 30, 2013, at the age of 67. Her death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many students she inspired over the course of her career.
