The New Moscow Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has captivated audiences around the world with their stunning performances. The choir was founded in 1990 by conductor and composer Boris Tevlin, who sought to create a new type of choral music that blended traditional Russian folk songs with contemporary classical music. Tevlin was born in Moscow in 1949 and began his musical career as a pianist. He later studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory and became interested in choral music after attending a performance by the famous Moscow State Chamber Choir. Tevlin was struck by the beauty and power of the choir's sound and decided to form his own ensemble. The New Moscow Choir quickly gained a reputation for their innovative approach to choral music. Tevlin's arrangements of traditional Russian folk songs were infused with elements of jazz, rock, and classical music, creating a unique and dynamic sound that was unlike anything else in the choral world. The choir's first major performance came in 1991, when they were invited to perform at the International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland. The choir's performance was a sensation, and they were awarded the festival's top prize. This was just the beginning of the choir's success on the international stage. Over the years, the New Moscow Choir has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including jazz pianist Chick Corea and classical violinist Joshua Bell. One of the choir's most memorable performances came in 2003, when they performed at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II. The choir's rendition of the Russian Orthodox hymn "Bless the Lord, O My Soul" brought the pope to tears and earned the choir a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to their performances, the New Moscow Choir has also released several critically acclaimed albums. Their 1994 album "Russian Choral Music" was nominated for a Grammy Award, and their 2001 album "Russian Orthodox Chants" won the prestigious Echo Klassik award in Germany. Despite their many accolades, the New Moscow Choir has remained committed to their mission of creating innovative and inspiring choral music. They continue to tour the world, sharing their unique sound with audiences everywhere.
