Kitzis grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both professional violinists. His father, Julius Kitzis, was a member of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and his mother, Ruth Kitzis, was a violin teacher. Kitzis started playing the violin at the age of four, and he showed exceptional talent from an early age. He received his first violin lessons from his mother, and later he studied with some of the most renowned violin teachers in the world, including Ivan Galamian, Dorothy DeLay, and Joseph Fuchs. In 1973, Kitzis graduated from the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied with Ivan Galamian. He then went on to study with Dorothy DeLay at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Kitzis also studied with Joseph Fuchs at the Juilliard School of Music. Kitzis made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1974, at the age of 19. He performed the Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber, and his performance was highly acclaimed by both the audience and the critics. This performance marked the beginning of Kitzis's successful career as a soloist. Over the years, Kitzis has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie. One of the highlights of Kitzis's career was his performance of the Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985. This performance was conducted by Herbert von Karajan, one of the most renowned conductors of the 20th century. Kitzis's performance was highly praised by Karajan, who described him as "one of the most talented violinists of his generation." In addition to his career as a soloist, Kitzis is also a highly respected chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, and the Tokyo Quartet. Kitzis has also collaborated with many of the world's leading pianists, including Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, and Mitsuko Uchida.
