He went on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. McKinney's early compositions were influenced by the works of classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. He went on to compose several other piano sonatas, including Sonata No. 2 and Sonata No. 3. In addition to his piano works, McKinney also composed chamber music, orchestral works, and vocal music.
