She was born on August 22, 1913, in Vienna, Austria, to a family of musicians. Her father, Karl Tegetthoff, was a well-known conductor, and her mother, Maria Tegetthoff, was a pianist. Else grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. Else's talent for music was evident from an early age, and she received her first piano lessons from her mother. She later studied at the Vienna Academy of Music, where she was trained by some of the most prominent musicians of the time. Her teachers included Richard Robert, Emil von Sauer, and Franz Schmidt. Else's career as a musician began in the 1930s when she started performing in concerts across Europe. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the world. Her performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. One of the highlights of Else's career was her performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1938. She played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bruno Walter. The performance was a huge success, and Else received a standing ovation from the audience. Else's career was interrupted by World War II, and she was forced to flee Austria in 1940. She settled in the United States and continued to perform in concerts across the country. She also taught at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she trained some of the most talented young pianists of the time. In 1950, Else returned to Europe and resumed her career as a concert pianist. She performed in concerts across the continent and was invited to play with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. She also recorded several albums, which were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. One of the highlights of Else's later career was her performance at the Edinburgh Festival in 1960. She played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488, with the Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. The performance was a huge success, and Else received a standing ovation from the audience. Else's talent as a musician was recognized with several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1956, she was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57, "Appassionata." In 1963, she was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1973, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Else continued to perform in concerts and record albums well into her 80s. She was known for her dedication to music and her commitment to excellence.
