The Cello Project is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1999 by a group of cellists who shared a passion for exploring the versatility of the cello. The ensemble is known for its innovative arrangements of classical and contemporary music, as well as its collaborations with other musicians and artists. The founding members of the Cello Project were Gideon Freudmann, Skip vonKuske, and Anna Fritz. They were later joined by a rotating cast of cellists, including Kevin Jackson, Ashia Grzesik, and Diane Chaplin. The ensemble has also collaborated with a variety of guest musicians, including singer-songwriter Laura Gibson and indie rock band The Dandy Warhols. One of the Cello Project's early highlights was their performance at the 2002 Oregon Bach Festival, where they played a program of Bach's cello suites arranged for multiple cellos. The ensemble's unique approach to the music was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped to establish their reputation as a group that was willing to take risks and push boundaries. Over the years, the Cello Project has continued to experiment with different genres and styles of music. They have performed everything from classical works by composers like Beethoven and Brahms to contemporary pieces by artists like Radiohead and Kanye West. Their arrangements often feature multiple cellos playing different parts, creating a rich and complex sound that is both powerful and nuanced. In addition to their live performances, the Cello Project has also released several albums. Their debut album, "The Cello Project," was released in 2000 and featured original compositions by the ensemble's members. They have since released several more albums, including "OK Computer" (2006), which features their arrangements of Radiohead songs, and "Beethoven's 5th Symphony" (2012), which features their interpretation of the classic symphony. The Cello Project has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, they were named "Best Classical Group" by the Portland Music Awards. They have also been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Weekend Edition," and have performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Despite their success, the Cello Project remains committed to their mission of exploring the possibilities of the cello. They continue to experiment with new arrangements and collaborations, and are always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of classical music.
