The Lark Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1985 by four young musicians who were studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The original members of the quartet were violinists Robin Mayforth and Laura Sewell, violist Anna Kruger, and cellist Elizabeth Anderson. The quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and unique sound. They won the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1987, which helped to launch their career. The quartet has since gone on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. One of the highlights of the Lark Quartet's career was their performance at the White House in 1992. They were invited to perform for President George H.W. Bush and his guests, which included the President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin. The quartet's performance was well-received, and they were praised for their exceptional musicianship. Over the years, the Lark Quartet has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Leon Fleisher, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell. They have also commissioned and premiered many new works by contemporary composers, including Aaron Jay Kernis, Jennifer Higdon, and John Harbison. In addition to their performances, the Lark Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released over a dozen albums, including a Grammy-nominated recording of Aaron Jay Kernis's String Quartets Nos. 1, 2, and 3. The quartet has also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including NPR's Performance Today and CBS Sunday Morning. Throughout their career, the Lark Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades. In addition to the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, they have been awarded the Gold Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Lark Quartet has remained committed to their mission of bringing exceptional chamber music to audiences around the world. They continue to perform regularly and are highly regarded for their musicianship, artistry, and dedication to their craft.
