The Cypress String Quartet was a classical music ensemble that was founded in San Francisco, California in 1996. The quartet consisted of four members: Cecily Ward and Tom Stone on violin, Ethan Filner on viola, and Jennifer Kloetzel on cello. The ensemble quickly gained recognition for their dynamic performances and unique interpretations of classical music. The Cypress String Quartet's repertoire included works by classical composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn, as well as contemporary composers like Jennifer Higdon and Kevin Puts. The quartet was known for their ability to seamlessly blend traditional and modern styles, creating a sound that was both timeless and innovative. One of the highlights of the Cypress String Quartet's career was their residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. During their residency, the quartet worked with renowned musicians and composers, honing their craft and expanding their repertoire. The residency also gave the quartet the opportunity to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls in North America, including Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition to their residency at the Banff Centre, the Cypress String Quartet performed at numerous other venues throughout their career. They were regular performers at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and also performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Wigmore Hall in London. The Cypress String Quartet was also the recipient of numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2003, they were awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of chamber music. They were also the first ensemble to win the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, which recognizes outstanding young string quartets. Despite their success, the Cypress String Quartet announced in 2016 that they would be disbanding at the end of the year. The decision was a difficult one for the quartet, but they felt that it was time to move on to new projects and opportunities. In their final year, the Cypress String Quartet embarked on a farewell tour, performing in venues across the United States and Europe. The tour was a celebration of the quartet's career and a chance for them to say goodbye to their fans and supporters. The Cypress String Quartet's legacy lives on through their recordings, which continue to be celebrated by classical music enthusiasts around the world. Their unique sound and innovative interpretations of classical music have inspired countless musicians and will continue to do so for generations to come.
