The Rochester Chamber Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Rochester, New York. Founded in 1957, the orchestra has a rich history of bringing classical music to audiences in the Rochester area and beyond. The orchestra was founded by a group of local musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create a professional ensemble that could perform at a high level. The founding members included violinist David Hochstein, cellist Bernard Zaslav, and conductor David Fetler. Over the years, the orchestra has had many talented musicians and conductors, including David Fetler, David Zinman, and Christopher Seaman. Today, the orchestra is led by conductor and music director, Ward Stare. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the Eastman Theatre in 1964, where it played Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success and helped to establish the orchestra as a major force in the classical music world. In addition to its performances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester Chamber Orchestra has also performed with many other renowned musicians and ensembles, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and the Emerson String Quartet. In 1995, it was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that perform contemporary music and promote new composers.
