Born in 1953 in London, England, Fifield showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the trumpet and went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. After completing his studies, Fifield began his career as a freelance trumpeter, performing with various orchestras and ensembles in the UK and abroad. He also began conducting and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile conductor. In 1984, he was appointed the conductor of the London-based chamber orchestra, the London Bach Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During his tenure with the London Bach Orchestra, Fifield conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete cycle of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including the pianist John Lill and the violinist Nigel Kennedy. In addition to his work with the London Bach Orchestra, Fifield conducted many other orchestras and ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. In addition to his work as a conductor, Fifield is also an accomplished author and lecturer. He has written several books on music, including biographies of the composers Antonio Vivaldi and George Frideric Handel. He has also written extensively on the history of music and has lectured on various aspects of music at universities and music schools around the world.
