Role:ConductorPeriod:BaroqueGenre:ChamberVocalJohn Dornenburg is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a performer, teacher, and scholar. Born in 1951 in San Francisco, California, Dornenburg grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from an early age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which gave him a unique perspective on music. Dornenburg began his musical journey by learning to play the cello at the age of nine. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in local orchestras and ensembles. He continued his musical education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Bonnie Hampton and Margaret Rowell. After completing his studies, Dornenburg began his professional career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles across the United States. He also became interested in historical performance practice and began studying the viola da gamba, a Renaissance-era instrument that was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dornenburg's interest in historical performance practice led him to study with some of the leading experts in the field, including Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken. He also became a founding member of several early music ensembles, including the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the American Bach Soloists. Throughout his career, Dornenburg has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. He has appeared as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also performed at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. In addition to his work as a performer, Dornenburg is also a respected teacher and scholar. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Juilliard School. He has also written several books on historical performance practice, including "The Art of Playing the Violin" and "The Viola da Gamba: Its Origin and History." Dornenburg's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1999, he was awarded the Noah Greenberg Award by the American Musicological Society for his contributions to the field of early music. He has also received the Early Music America Award for Outstanding Achievement in Early Music Performance and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's President's Medal. Despite his many accomplishments, Dornenburg remains committed to his craft and continues to perform, teach, and write about music. His passion for historical performance practice has inspired countless musicians and has helped to preserve and promote the music of past eras for future generations.More....
