He was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1953, and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at an early age. Proud began his musical journey by learning the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the organ, which became his primary instrument. He studied music at Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975. He then went on to study at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, where he earned a soloist diploma in 1978. Proud's career as a professional musician began in 1979 when he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny, Ireland. He held this position for ten years and gained a reputation as an outstanding performer and conductor. During this time, he also performed as a soloist in various concerts and festivals in Ireland and Europe. In 1989, Proud moved to the United States, where he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. He held this position for ten years and gained a reputation as one of the leading organists in the United States. His recordings have received numerous awards and nominations, including a Grammy nomination for his recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. In addition to his performing and recording career, Proud is also a respected teacher and lecturer.
