Role:EnsemblePeriod:BaroqueClassicalGenre:ConcertoThe New Irish Chamber Orchestra (NICO) is a classical music ensemble based in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1970 by violinist and conductor, André Prieur, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and innovative chamber orchestras in Europe. Prieur, a French-born musician, had previously worked with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and was inspired to create a new ensemble that would focus on contemporary music and collaborations with other art forms. He assembled a group of talented musicians from Ireland and abroad, and the New Irish Chamber Orchestra was born. Over the years, NICO has had a number of different members, but the core group has remained relatively stable. The ensemble is led by violinist and artistic director, Katherine Hunka, who has been with the group since 2002. Other key members include violist Joachim Roewer, cellist Christian Elliott, and double bassist Malachy Robinson. One of the hallmarks of NICO's performances is their commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by a number of Irish and international composers, including John Kinsella, Gerald Barry, and Kevin Volans. They have also collaborated with a range of artists from other disciplines, such as visual artists, dancers, and poets. NICO has performed extensively throughout Ireland and Europe, and has been praised for their virtuosity and innovative programming. Some of their most notable performances include a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the BBC Proms, and a performance at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II. In addition to their live performances, NICO has also released a number of critically acclaimed recordings. Their discography includes works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as Ian Wilson and Raymond Deane. Over the years, NICO has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2010, they were awarded the National Concert Hall Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their contribution to Irish music. They have also been nominated for several Irish Times Theatre Awards for their collaborations with theatre companies. Despite the challenges facing classical music ensembles in the 21st century, NICO remains a vital and innovative force in the Irish music scene. With their commitment to contemporary music and interdisciplinary collaborations, they continue to push the boundaries of what a chamber orchestra can be.More....
