Jo-Michael Scheibe is a renowned conductor, educator, and choral clinician in the world of classical music. He was born in 1952 in New York City and grew up in a musical family. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a singer and pianist. Scheibe began his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the piano and trumpet. He later discovered his passion for choral music and pursued it as a career. Scheibe received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. He then went on to earn his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He continued his studies at the University of Southern California, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music. Scheibe's career as a conductor began in 1976 when he was appointed the Director of Choral Activities at California State University, Northridge. He held this position for 27 years and built a highly respected choral program. Under his leadership, the CSUN Chamber Singers and the CSUN Women's Chorale won numerous awards and performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. In addition to his work at CSUN, Scheibe has conducted many other choirs and orchestras around the world. He has conducted the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Taipei Philharmonic Foundation, and the World Youth Choir, among others. He has also served as a guest conductor for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Scheibe is also a highly respected choral clinician and has conducted workshops and masterclasses for choirs and conductors around the world. He has served as a guest conductor and clinician for the American Choral Directors Association, the International Federation for Choral Music, and the World Symposium on Choral Music. Scheibe has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2010, he was awarded the American Choral Directors Association's prestigious Brock Commission for his work as a composer and arranger. He has also been awarded the California Music Educators Association's Outstanding Music Educator Award and the University of Southern California's Outstanding Alumnus Award. Scheibe is also a prolific composer and arranger of choral music. His works have been performed by choirs around the world and have been featured on many recordings. He has also edited and arranged many choral music collections, including the popular "Choral Music Experience" series. In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Scheibe is also a dedicated educator. He has taught choral conducting and music education at California State University, Northridge, the University of Miami, and the University of Southern California. He is currently the Chair of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. Jo-Michael Scheibe's contributions to the world of classical music are immeasurable.
