The Cleveland Quartet was a renowned classical music ensemble that was founded in 1969 in Cleveland, Ohio. The quartet consisted of four members, violinists Donald Weilerstein and Peter Salaff, violist Martha Strongin Katz, and cellist Paul Katz. The ensemble quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and became one of the most celebrated string quartets of the 20th century. The founding members of the Cleveland Quartet all had impressive musical backgrounds. Donald Weilerstein had studied at the Juilliard School and had been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Peter Salaff had also studied at Juilliard and had been a member of the New York String Quartet. Martha Strongin Katz had studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and had been a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Paul Katz had studied at the Juilliard School and had been a member of the New York Philharmonic. The quartet's first major performance was in 1970 at the Aspen Music Festival. They quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and were invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. They also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. The Cleveland Quartet was known for their interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, but they also performed works by contemporary composers such as George Crumb and Elliott Carter. They were particularly known for their performances of the complete Beethoven string quartets, which they recorded for Telarc Records in the 1980s. The quartet won numerous awards throughout their career, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1971, the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 1984, and the Cleveland Arts Prize in 1985. They were also inducted into the Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2013. One of the highlights of the Cleveland Quartet's career was their residency at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. They were appointed as the school's quartet-in-residence in 1976 and held the position for 26 years. During their residency, they taught master classes and performed regularly, inspiring a new generation of musicians. The Cleveland Quartet disbanded in 1995, after 26 years of performing together. The members went on to pursue individual careers in music, but their legacy as one of the greatest string quartets of all time lives on. Their recordings continue to be celebrated and their influence on the world of classical music is still felt today.
