She is a founding member of the Ensemble Made In Canada, a quartet that has won numerous awards and accolades, including the 2006 Banff International String Quartet Competition and the 2013 Ontario Contact Touring Award. Mercer has also been recognized for her individual achievements as a cellist. In 2002, she won the Grand Prize at the Canadian Music Competition, and in 2005, she was awarded the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award, which is given annually to the most talented Canadian musician under the age of 30. In addition to her performing career, Mercer is also a passionate educator. She has taught at the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. She is currently an associate professor of cello at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal. Mercer is also committed to promoting new music and has premiered many works by Canadian composers. She has recorded several albums, including "Cello Concertos" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and "Brahms: The String Sextets" with the New Orford String Quartet.
