Born in Madrid, Spain in 1967, Mazzola grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at a young age. Mazzola began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and the trumpet. Mazzola’s passion for music led him to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he earned a degree in conducting. He also studied at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he was mentored by the renowned conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti. Mazzola’s career as a conductor began in 1993 when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence, Italy. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was invited to conduct many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Mazzola’s most notable performances was his debut at the Royal Opera House in London in 2009, where he conducted a production of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor”. The performance was a critical success and established Mazzola as one of the leading conductors of his generation. Mazzola has also been recognized for his work in promoting contemporary music. He has conducted many world premieres of new works by composers such as Philippe Boesmans, Luca Francesconi, and Bruno Mantovani. In 2011, he was awarded the “Premio Abbiati” by the Italian music critics’ association for his contributions to contemporary music. In addition to his work as a conductor, Mazzola is also a respected teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, and has mentored many young conductors who have gone on to successful careers in the music industry. In 2016, he was awarded the “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French government for his contributions to the arts.
