Born on August 22, 1956, in Boston, Massachusetts, Kelley grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Kelley's parents encouraged him to pursue music, and he began singing in church choirs at a young age. Kelley attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied voice with the renowned soprano Phyllis Curtin. He also studied with other notable teachers, including Joan Patenaude-Yarnell and John Moriarty.
