Modo Antiquo is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 1984 by conductor and harpsichordist Federico Maria Sardelli, who remains its artistic director to this day. Over the years, Modo Antiquo has become one of the most respected and acclaimed Baroque ensembles in the world, known for its virtuosic performances and innovative programming. The founding of Modo Antiquo was the result of Sardelli's passion for Baroque music and his desire to create an ensemble that would specialize in the performance of this repertoire. Sardelli had already established himself as a leading harpsichordist and conductor in Italy, having studied with some of the most renowned Baroque musicians of the time. He was also a prolific composer, with a particular interest in the music of the Baroque era. Sardelli assembled a group of like-minded musicians who shared his passion for Baroque music, and together they formed Modo Antiquo. The ensemble's name is derived from the Italian phrase "modo antico," which means "in the ancient style." This reflects the ensemble's commitment to performing Baroque music in a historically informed manner, using period instruments and techniques to recreate the sound and style of the era. From its earliest days, Modo Antiquo was known for its innovative programming and adventurous approach to Baroque music. The ensemble's repertoire included not only the well-known works of composers such as Bach and Handel, but also lesser-known works by composers such as Vivaldi, Corelli, and Scarlatti. Sardelli was particularly interested in exploring the music of the Italian Baroque, which he felt had been neglected in favor of the more familiar German and English repertoire. Modo Antiquo quickly gained a reputation for its virtuosic performances and its ability to bring the music of the Baroque era to life. The ensemble's members were all highly skilled musicians, many of whom were also accomplished soloists in their own right. Sardelli's leadership and vision helped to create a cohesive and dynamic ensemble that was able to capture the spirit and energy of Baroque music. Over the years, Modo Antiquo has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world. The ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and has collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians and conductors of our time. Modo Antiquo has also recorded extensively, with over 50 albums to its name, many of which have received critical acclaim and awards. One of the highlights of Modo Antiquo's career was its performance at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. The ensemble performed a program of Italian Baroque music, including works by Vivaldi, Corelli, and Scarlatti, to great acclaim. The performance was hailed as a triumph of historically informed performance practice, and cemented Modo Antiquo's reputation as one of the leading Baroque ensembles of our time. Another notable performance by Modo Antiquo was its collaboration with the renowned conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner in 2013. The ensemble joined Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir for a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor, one of the greatest works of the Baroque era. The performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and musicality, and was hailed as a testament to the enduring power of Baroque music.
