Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticModernGenre:ConcertoOperaOrchestralThe Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra (KWS) is a Canadian classical music ensemble based in the twin cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario. The orchestra was founded in 1945 by a group of local musicians who wanted to bring classical music to the community. Since then, the KWS has become one of Canada's leading orchestras, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The KWS has had many talented musicians over the years, but some of its most notable members include conductor Edwin Outwater, who served as music director from 2007 to 2017, and principal cellist Paul Pulford, who has been with the orchestra since 1979. Other key members of the orchestra include concertmaster Bénédicte Lauzière, principal oboist James Mason, and principal clarinetist Trevor Wagler. Over the years, the KWS has performed a wide range of classical music, from the works of Bach and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by living composers. Some of the orchestra's most memorable performances include its 2012 concert with Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, which was broadcast on CBC television, and its 2015 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which was hailed as a "triumph" by critics. The KWS has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2017, the orchestra was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the Ontario Arts Council, in recognition of its outstanding performances and contributions to the arts community. The KWS has also been nominated for several Juno Awards, Canada's top music awards, and has won several awards from the Canadian Music Centre for its support of Canadian composers. In addition to its regular concert series, the KWS is also involved in a number of community outreach programs. These include the Kinderconcerts program, which introduces young children to classical music through interactive performances, and the Adopt-a-Player program, which pairs KWS musicians with local schools to provide music education and mentorship. Overall, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra has a rich history and a bright future. With its talented musicians, innovative programming, and commitment to community outreach, the KWS is sure to continue delighting audiences for many years to come.More....
