He was the son of a famous Polish composer, conductor, and musicologist, Kazimierz Sikorski. Sterczynski grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a very young age. He started playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent and passion for music. Sterczynski received his formal music education at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianists such as Zbigniew Drzewiecki and Władysław Szpilman. He graduated with honors in 1952 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Sterczynski's career took off in the 1950s when he won several prestigious awards and competitions, including the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955. This competition was a turning point in his career, as it brought him international recognition and acclaim. He was praised for his technical virtuosity, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of Chopin's music. After his success at the Chopin Competition, Sterczynski embarked on a world tour, performing in major cities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
