Period:ClassicalModernGenre:ChamberThe Angeles String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1985 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Angeles String Quartet were violinists Kathleen Lenski and Tracy Silverman, violist Brian Dembow, and cellist Stephen Erdody. All four musicians had impressive credentials and had performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. They came together with a shared vision of creating a quartet that would be known for its technical excellence, musical sensitivity, and innovative programming. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances and was soon in demand for concerts and festivals around the world. They made their debut at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. in 1986 and went on to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. One of the highlights of the Angeles String Quartet's early career was their performance at the 1988 Olympic Arts Festival in Seoul, South Korea. The quartet was one of only a handful of American ensembles invited to perform at the festival, which was a celebration of the arts and culture of the participating countries. The Angeles String Quartet's performance was widely praised, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, the Angeles String Quartet has collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians in the world, including pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Itzhak Perlman. They have also commissioned and premiered works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Harbison, William Bolcom, and Joan Tower. In addition to their performances, the Angeles String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released over 20 albums, many of which have received critical acclaim and awards. Their recording of the complete Beethoven string quartets won a Grammy Award in 1991, and their recording of the complete Mozart string quartets was nominated for a Grammy in 1995. The Angeles String Quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to music education. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and conservatories around the world, and have been artists-in-residence at several institutions, including the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Angeles String Quartet has remained committed to their original vision of creating a unique sound and bringing new works to audiences around the world. The current members of the quartet are violinists Sarah Thornblade and Luanne Homzy, violist Michael Tseitlin, and cellist Andrew Shulman. In recent years, the Angeles String Quartet has continued to perform at major venues and festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. They have also continued to commission and premiere new works, including a string quartet by composer John Adams that was premiered in 2015.More....
