Pauliner Barockensemble is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 1991 by the conductor and harpsichordist Ludger Rémy, who was then a professor of musicology at the University of Leipzig. The ensemble takes its name from the Paulinerkirche, a church in Leipzig that was destroyed in 1968 and was the site of many important musical performances during the Baroque era. The main members of the ensemble are Ludger Rémy, who serves as the conductor and harpsichordist, and a group of highly skilled musicians who specialize in playing Baroque instruments such as the viola da gamba, the baroque violin, and the traverso. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of guest soloists, including the soprano Dorothee Mields and the countertenor Andreas Scholl. Over the years, Pauliner Barockensemble has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Bachfest Leipzig, the Handel Festival in Halle, and the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht. The ensemble has also released a number of critically acclaimed recordings, including a series of CDs devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig in 2000. This performance was particularly significant because it marked the first time that the work had been performed in the church where Bach himself had served as the cantor. The performance was widely praised for its emotional intensity and its faithful interpretation of Bach's music. Another notable performance by Pauliner Barockensemble was its collaboration with the choreographer Sasha Waltz on a production of Bach's Mass in B Minor. This production, which premiered in 2010, combined dance, music, and visual art to create a powerful and immersive experience for the audience. The performance was widely praised for its innovative approach to Bach's music and its ability to bring the work to life in a new and exciting way. In addition to its performances, Pauliner Barockensemble has also received a number of awards and honors over the years. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Bach's St. John Passion. This award is one of the most prestigious honors in the classical music industry and is given to artists who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Overall, Pauliner Barockensemble is a highly respected and accomplished ensemble that has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Through its performances, recordings, and collaborations, the ensemble has helped to bring the music of the Baroque era to new audiences and to keep this important musical tradition alive for future generations.
