Thiago de Mello is a Brazilian classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on March 22, 1948, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Thiago was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Thiago's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he began studying music formally at the age of six. He studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro. He also studied with renowned Brazilian composer and conductor Heitor Villa-Lobos. In 1967, Thiago moved to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He studied jazz composition and arranging and graduated in 1970. While at Berklee, Thiago was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, classical, and Brazilian music. After graduating from Berklee, Thiago returned to Brazil and began working as a composer and arranger. He also began performing as a pianist and conductor. In 1972, he formed the group O Terço, which became one of the most popular progressive rock bands in Brazil. In the early 1980s, Thiago began focusing more on classical music. He composed several works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in 1983. He also composed several chamber music works, including his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Quarteto Amazônia in 1985. Thiago's music is characterized by its blend of Brazilian and classical influences. He often incorporates Brazilian rhythms and melodies into his classical compositions, creating a unique and distinctive sound. Thiago has performed as a pianist and conductor with orchestras and ensembles around the world. He has conducted the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and the Rio de Janeiro Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also performed as a pianist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Thiago has also been a dedicated music educator. He has taught at several universities, including the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the University of São Paulo. He has also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world. Thiago's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Brazilian government. In 2002, he was awarded the Medalha da Inconfidência by the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. In 2010, he was awarded the Medalha Pedro Ernesto by the city of Rio de Janeiro. Thiago continues to be an active composer, performer, and educator. He has several upcoming performances and commissions, including a new work for the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. His music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
