Role:ComposerBirth:1942Death:2011Genre:ChamberGentil Montana was a Colombian composer and guitarist who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the development of classical guitar music in Latin America. Born on February 16, 1942, in the town of Ibagué, Colombia, Montana grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Guillermo Montana, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Ana María Arbeláez, was a pianist and music teacher. Montana began playing the guitar at a young age and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several teachers in his hometown before moving to Bogotá to continue his studies at the National University of Colombia. While in Bogotá, Montana became involved in the city's vibrant music scene, playing in jazz and rock bands and collaborating with other musicians. In the early 1960s, Montana traveled to Europe to study classical guitar with the renowned Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. He spent several years studying with Segovia in Madrid and later in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. During this time, Montana also studied composition with the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Montana's experiences in Europe had a profound influence on his music, and he began to incorporate elements of classical music into his compositions for the guitar. He also became interested in the traditional music of Colombia and other Latin American countries, and began to incorporate these influences into his work as well. Montana's compositions for the guitar are characterized by their virtuosity and their use of traditional Latin American rhythms and melodies. His most famous work is the suite "Porro," which is based on the traditional Colombian dance of the same name. The suite consists of six movements, each of which is based on a different aspect of the dance. The work has become a staple of the classical guitar repertoire and is widely regarded as one of the most important works in the history of Latin American classical music. In addition to his work as a composer, Montana was also a respected performer and teacher. He gave concerts throughout Latin America and Europe, and taught at several universities in Colombia. He was also a prolific writer, and published several books on music theory and guitar technique. Montana's contributions to the development of classical guitar music in Latin America have been widely recognized. In 1994, he was awarded the National Prize for Culture by the Colombian government, and in 2003 he was posthumously awarded the Order of San Carlos, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Colombian citizen. Montana died on November 29, 2011, at the age of 69. His legacy as a composer, performer, and teacher continues to inspire musicians throughout Latin America and beyond.More....
