He was born on October 19, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of musicians. His father was a jazz guitarist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Daniels grew up in a musical environment and started playing the clarinet at the age of 13. Daniels' talent was quickly recognized, and he was soon playing in local jazz clubs. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied classical clarinet with Leon Russianoff. He also studied jazz with Charles Russo and Joe Allard.
