Born on May 22, 1964, in Bergen, Norway, Slåttebrekk showed an early aptitude for music and began piano lessons at the age of six. He studied with several prominent teachers in Norway, including Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Jiri Hlinka, before continuing his education at the Juilliard School in New York City. Slåttebrekk's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. In 1986, he won first prize in the Norwegian National Piano Competition, and the following year he was awarded the prestigious Grieg Prize for his interpretation of Edvard Grieg's music. In 1988, he made his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor under the baton of Mariss Jansons. Throughout the 1990s, Slåttebrekk continued to build his reputation as a soloist and chamber musician, performing extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1993, playing works by Grieg, Schumann, and Liszt, and in 1995 he was invited to perform at the White House for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. In addition to his performing career, Slåttebrekk has also been active as a recording artist. He has released several critically acclaimed albums, including a recording of Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and a solo album featuring works by Schumann, Liszt, and Debussy. His recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy nomination for his 2003 album of Bach's Goldberg Variations. One of Slåttebrekk's most notable achievements came in 2000, when he was awarded the prestigious Sibelius Prize by the Finnish government.
