Currentes is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. The ensemble is based in Montreal, Canada, and is known for its innovative and dynamic performances of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The founding members of Currentes were soprano and co-artistic director Hélène Brunet, tenor and co-artistic director Philippe Gagné, and harpsichordist and music director Seán Dagher. All three musicians had extensive experience performing early music and were eager to explore new ways of presenting this repertoire to modern audiences. Since its founding, Currentes has grown to include a number of other talented musicians, including violinist Chloe Meyers, cellist Elinor Frey, and lutenist Sylvain Bergeron. The ensemble's core members are all highly respected performers in the early music world, and their combined expertise and passion for the repertoire has helped to establish Currentes as one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in the field. One of the highlights of Currentes' early career was their performance at the Montreal Baroque Festival in 2016. The ensemble presented a program of music by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi, which was praised by critics and audiences alike for its energy, precision, and emotional depth. This performance helped to establish Currentes as a major force in the early music scene in Canada and beyond. In addition to their performances of early music, Currentes is also known for their collaborations with contemporary composers. The ensemble has worked with a number of composers to create new works that draw on the sounds and techniques of early music while also exploring new sonic possibilities. This innovative approach has helped to expand the boundaries of the early music genre and has earned Currentes a reputation as a forward-thinking and adventurous ensemble. One of the most notable collaborations in Currentes' career was their work with the Canadian composer Ana Sokolović. In 2018, the ensemble premiered Sokolović's piece "Svadba - Wedding," which was inspired by traditional Balkan wedding music. The piece featured intricate vocal harmonies, complex rhythms, and a wide range of instrumental textures, and was praised by critics for its originality and emotional power. In addition to their performances and collaborations, Currentes has also received a number of awards and accolades for their work. In 2017, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Discovery of the Year" by the Conseil québécois de la musique, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the Quebec music scene. The following year, Currentes was awarded the Prix Opus for "Concert of the Year - Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque" for their performance of Monteverdi's music at the Montreal Baroque Festival. Overall, Currentes is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to exploring the rich and varied repertoire of early music. With their exceptional musicianship, creative programming, and commitment to collaboration and experimentation, they have established themselves as one of the most exciting and influential ensembles in the field today.
