Period:RomanticModernGenre:ChamberConcertoTherese-Marie Gilissen was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 5, 1944, in Brussels, Belgium. She was the daughter of a Belgian father and a French mother, and her family was deeply involved in the arts. Her father was a painter, and her mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Therese-Marie showed an early interest in music. Therese-Marie began her musical education at the age of six, studying piano with her mother. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, she was performing in public. She continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she studied with renowned pianist Eduardo del Pueyo. In 1963, Therese-Marie won first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, which launched her career as a concert pianist. She went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Therese-Marie was known for her virtuosic technique and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she played. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann. Her performances were often described as "spellbinding" and "transcendent." In addition to her concert career, Therese-Marie was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists themselves. Throughout her career, Therese-Marie received numerous awards and honors. In addition to her win at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, she was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Paris in 1970 and the Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros in 1972. She was also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1985. Tragically, Therese-Marie's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1987 at the age of 43. She had been scheduled to perform at the Salzburg Festival that year, but she passed away just weeks before the concert. Her death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many students she taught. In conclusion, Therese-Marie Gilissen was a gifted pianist and teacher who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Her virtuosic technique and emotional depth made her performances unforgettable, and her influence can still be felt today.
