Steven Mercurio is a renowned conductor, composer, and arranger in the world of classical music. Born on August 31, 1957, in New York City, Mercurio grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Mercurio started playing the piano at the age of four and began composing music at the age of six. Mercurio attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition and conducting. He also studied at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Gunther Schuller. Mercurio's talent as a conductor was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the classical music world. Mercurio's career as a conductor began in the 1980s when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic. He also worked as the music director of the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1988 to 1991. In 1991, Mercurio was appointed as the principal conductor of the Opera Company of Philadelphia, a position he held until 1995. He also worked with some of the most talented soloists in the world, including Plácido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, and Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to his work as a conductor, Mercurio is also an accomplished composer and arranger. He has composed numerous works for orchestra, including "The Mandela Suite," which was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mercurio has also arranged music for some of the world's most popular artists, including Elton John, Metallica, and Sting. Mercurio's career reached new heights in the 2000s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi in Italy. During his tenure, he conducted numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Verdi's "Requiem." Mercurio's work with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi earned him international recognition and established him as one of the most talented conductors of his generation.
