Alexander Fiterstein is a world-renowned clarinetist who has captivated audiences with his virtuosic performances and musical sensitivity. Born in Belarus in 1977, Fiterstein began playing the clarinet at the age of seven and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. His family immigrated to Israel when he was nine years old, and he continued his musical studies there, eventually attending the Israel Arts and Science Academy in Jerusalem. Fiterstein's talent was recognized early on, and he won numerous competitions and awards as a young musician. In 1994, he was awarded first prize at the International Clarinet Competition in Ghent, Belgium, and in 1995 he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York City. These early successes paved the way for a career as a soloist and chamber musician, and Fiterstein quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young clarinetists of his generation. Throughout his career, Fiterstein has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned chamber musicians, including pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of Fiterstein's most notable performances was his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2005, where he performed Mozart's Clarinet Concerto under the baton of conductor David Robertson. The performance was widely praised for Fiterstein's technical mastery and musical sensitivity, and it helped to establish him as a leading interpreter of Mozart's music. In addition to his performances as a soloist and chamber musician, Fiterstein is also an active educator and mentor. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Michigan, and he has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. He is also the founder and artistic director of the InterHarmony International Music Festival, which brings together young musicians from around the world for intensive training and performance opportunities. Fiterstein's discography includes several critically acclaimed recordings, including his 2018 album "The Clarinet Virtuoso," which features works by Brahms, Schumann, and Weber. In 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. He has also been awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award, and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. Despite his many accomplishments, Fiterstein remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
