From a young age, Ghestem showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Ghestem's musical education began at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, Nadia Boulanger. He later continued his studies at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he received a diploma in piano performance. Ghestem's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1967, he won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which catapulted him to international fame. This was a significant achievement for Ghestem, as the competition was one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. Following his success at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Ghestem embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, captivating audiences with his virtuosic performances. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff.
