He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Leonardy showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Leonardy's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg at the age of six, where he received his first piano lessons. He continued his studies at the conservatory and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany. During his studies, Leonardy won several awards and competitions, including the first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy, in 1973. This marked the beginning of his international career as a pianist. Leonardy's talent and dedication to music led him to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world. He has performed with renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Herbert von Karajan, and Leonard Bernstein. One of Leonardy's most memorable performances was his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1978. He performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a huge success and marked the beginning of Leonardy's long-standing relationship with the Salzburg Festival. Leonardy's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, which he has recorded extensively. In addition to his career as a performer, Leonardy is also a respected teacher. He has taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, the Conservatoire de Luxembourg, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Many of his students have gone on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Leonardy has received numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Liszt's Sonata in B minor. He was also awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1992.
