Jóhann Jóhannsson was a renowned Icelandic composer who was born on September 19, 1969, in Reykjavik, Iceland. He was the son of Jóhann Gunnarsson and Hildur Árnadóttir, both of whom were musicians. Jóhannsson grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of 11 and later learned to play the guitar and the trombone. Jóhannsson studied languages and literature at the University of Iceland and later went on to study composition at the Freiburg University of Music in Germany. He also studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a degree in composition. Jóhannsson's early works were influenced by minimalism and electronic music. His first album, "Englabörn," was released in 2002 and was based on the music he composed for a play of the same name. The album was well-received and established Jóhannsson as a composer to watch. In 2006, Jóhannsson released "IBM 1401, A User's Manual," which was inspired by the IBM 1401 computer, which his father had used in his work as a computer engineer. The album was a critical success and was later adapted into a multimedia performance piece. Jóhannsson's music was often described as cinematic, and he went on to compose music for several films, including "Prisoners," "The Theory of Everything," and "Sicario." He received an Academy Award nomination for his work on "The Theory of Everything." In 2016, Jóhannsson released "Orphée," which was inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus. The album was a departure from his earlier works and featured more orchestral arrangements. The album was well-received and was named one of the best albums of the year by several publications.
